Alpine skiing in Hafjell

From your hotel bed to the ski lift in minutes

Hafjell Alpine Center is Nermo's closest neighbour. In winter, the ski bus stops right outside the hotel door and brings you up to the lifts. In the evening, you can return to a warm hotel with food made from scratch, hot tubs under the open sky and a bed you actually sleep well in. That is perhaps why the World Ski Awards have named us Norway's best boutique ski hotel every single year since 2016. That’s ten years in a row.

Hafjell has 50 kilometres of trails, 19 lifts and a gondola that takes you from the valley floor to the mountain in ten minutes. The facility was built for the Winter Olympics in 1994 and is today one of the country's most popular winter destinations. Families, park riders, casual skiers and those who just want a few quiet hours in the sun. Everyone will find something here.

A facility that started with a pencil sketch

Long before the Olympic Committee had chosen Lillehammer, the Nermo family understood the potential on the mountainside opposite. In the autumn of 1936, Grandfather Johannes took his camera over to Glotten on the west side of the valley and snapped a photo of Hafjellsnuen. The next day, he developed the film and drew a trail with a pen, from the top straight down to the valley floor.

That route is almost identical to today's Hafjell trails.

It took a few decades and an Olympic decision before the sketch became reality. But the fact that the facility was eventually built exactly where a hotel host from Nermo envisioned it, is one of the stories that one recalls when standing on the slopes and looking out over the valley.

Trails for everyone, from the beginner slope to black pistes

Hafjell Alpine Center has over 30 trails spread over 50 kilometres: 13 green, 7 blue, 9 red and one black. The difference in altitude is 864 metres, and the longest slope measures 7.5 kilometres from top to bottom. The snow system ensures good conditions from November until well into the spring.

For families with children, Hafjell is hard to beat. Three children's areas are spread across the facility: one at the bottom of the valley by the ski school, one on Mosetertoppen after the gondola, and one at Gaiastova at the top. Frontyard for Kids has small jumps and park elements for the little ones, with a rolling mat instead of a ski lift. Safe, open and built to give kids a sense of mastery.

For those who want a little more speed, Hafjell has terrain parks on three levels. Backyard for advanced, and Main Park for those who mean business. The park has been named Norway's best, and has hosted everything from the X Games to training for the ski and snowboard stars of the future.

The gondola and the new Vidsyn Express

The gondola is the heart of Hafjell. It takes you 586 metres up to Mosetertoppen in ten minutes, and provides access to both alpine slopes, the cross-country skiing network and the restaurants in the mountains. For those who want to go even higher, the Hafjell 360 lift goes all the way to the top.

In 2023, the Vidsyn Express, a brand new six-seater with heated seats and a wind bubble, opened. It replaced two of the oldest lifts in the facility and opened up access to the south side of the mountain. The lift is 1,874 metres long and is located right next to Vidsyn, the mountain restaurant that belongs to Nermo. So yes, you can take the lift up, ski a bit, and sit down for lunch with a view of the entire Gudbrandsdalen valley. A metres above sea level.

Night skiing and practical info

Hafjell has 7 kilometres of floodlit trails plus the Backyard terrain park. Night skiing Tuesday to Thursday, until eight o'clock. That gives you a full working day at Nermo, a few hours on the slopes after the last meeting, and dinner afterwards. For conference guests, this is gold.

Lift passes can be purchased online or in the HafjellKvitfjell app. You can top up any Axess card you already have, or pick up a new one on the slopes. Ski rentals and ski schools are both available in the resort. The season usually lasts from late November to April.
